80 Arthritis Research Topics & Essay Examples

Definition Arthritis is a collective definition of a broad group of pathologies that affect the joints and surrounding connective tissue. It can be either a separate disease (spondylitis) or a complication of other diseases (for example, rheumatism). There are more than two hundred types of arthritis with different manifestations and causes.

History The 18th and 19th centuries brought the most significant breakthroughs in the understanding and diagnosis of arthritis. First, the English physician Heberden described “Nodi digitorum” – a classic feature of osteoarthritis, which today is called “Heberden’s nodes.” Heberden noted that these bony outgrowths represent a pathological process distinct from gout. In 1886, John Kent Spender, an English physician, coined the term osteoarthritis. Finally, in 1818, the French physician Alibert was the first to report the relationship between two seemingly absolutely unrelated diseases: psoriasis and arthritis.
Symptoms The main symptom of arthritis is an inflammatory process: swelling, redness of the skin and fever in the area of the affected joint. The negative effect of arthritis can extend not only to the joints: the heart, kidneys and liver are also at risk. Arthritis can occur in a latent form – in this case, the symptoms appear after exposure to provoking factors: stress, overwork, hypothermia or infection.
Causes To the major causes of arthritis belong chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, overweight, and too intense physical activity.
Prevention The prevention methods for arthritis mostly include timely treatment of infections and inflammations, healthy lifestyle, and supporting joints with special medications during intense physical activities.
Diagnostic Method The main method for diagnosing arthritis is ultrasound – it usually shows thickening of the periarticular soft tissues, as well as inflammatory fluid in the joint (synovitis). Additionally, it is advised to take rheumatoid factor and C-reactive protein tests.
Treatment For the treatment of arthritis, drugs of three groups are used: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, and glucocorticosteroids.
Duration In case of timely and quality treatment, the duration of disease usually do not exceed the 6 months mark.
Prognosis The severity of the manifestation of arthritis can be different, and progress is not necessarily rapid. However, if one does not pay attention to the problem, arthritis flows into a chronic form and can lead to disruption of the internal organs and disability: incapacity, deformation of joints and limbs.
Complications Among the various forms of arthritis, there are some serious complications that are important to diagnose in time. Rheumatism is an inflammatory disease of the connective tissue that affects large and medium joints, and also has specific manifestations. It can manifest itself sharply and pass on different joints, as if moving from one to another. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease in which the inflammatory process affects both the joints and many organs: for example, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels.
Frequency in Population 18% of disability among adults in the world is due to arthritis, according to WHO statistics.
Deaths While arthritis in itself is not a morbid disease, it severely affects the quality of life due to the pain, reduced mobility, and deformation of joints.
Society The society typically view arthritis as the disease “of old people”; however, people in the age group of 25-40 have high risks of developing arthritis.
