The Safe-Five Program: Nursing Theory

Orem’s self-care nursing theory best explains this program since it encourages the need for self-care. The theory embodies all the necessary caregiving approaches in its four concepts: supporting another, acting and doing for others, guiding others, and promoting an environment for personal development (Khademian et al., 2020). Through self-care, individuals’ actions are directed to the self of the environment for regulating circumstances that are in the interest of the person’s life, well-being, and health. The theory advocates for preventive processes critical in dealing with falls among the elderly population.

In modern days, fall incidences are among the leading causes of death among the elderly, thereby making the matter an issue of public health concern. According to Long-term Acute Care Hospitals (LTACHs), preventive measures taken have only managed to solve the matter to some extent (Stephen et al., 2019). Solving the issue completely is possible through the application of the Safe-five program alongside the self-care nursing theory. The theory’s focus on the importance of self-care compliments the program’s goal of preventing fall incidences among the elderly.

Providing an environment that can help nurture an ambient dwelling for the elderly supports the ideology of self-care theory, which caters to everyone’s needs. The Safe-five program encompasses all the aspects, which are intertwined to ensure that fall incidence among the elderly are prevented. Therefore, the discussion was productive since it addressed some of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) essentials, such as scientific underpinning, health care policy for advocacy in health care, and advanced nursing practice.

The leadership role competencies accomplished in this discussion were prudence and compassion. The prudence aspect was achieved by highlighting the problem of the elderly at LTACHs and offering a meaningful solution. Compassion was realized through my ardent search for a problem that, when solved, would have an immense impact. The feeling of empathy and compassion toward the elderly was the driving force that enabled me to strive for a meaningful discussion.
