Prevalence of Obesity in the U.S. among Children
Obesity among children and adolescents in the United States are obese has increased threefold in the last 30 years. According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 18.5 percent of children and adolescents in the United States were obese in 2015-2016 (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Overall, teenagers aged between 12-19 years and school-aged children between 6-11 years had a greater chance of having obesity than pre-kindergarten kids aged between 2-5 years (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Obesity was more prevalent in school-aged boys than in preschool-aged boys. Teenage females had a greater prevalence of obesity than preschool females, indicating 20.9% and 13.5%, respectively.
Medications/ Foods that Contribute to Weight Loss
Major foods include eggs, oatmeal, beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas. Nuts such as cashew nuts, almonds, peanuts, and macadamia also are favorable for weight loss. Food nutritionists highly recommend avocados, berries, and vegetables to prevent obesity (Metropulos, 2018). The U.S. drug administration highly recommends several drugs, such as Bupropion-naltrexone, Liraglutide, and Orlistat. The drugs suppress appetite or boost the sensation of food satisfaction, and Orlistat effectively prevents fat absorption.
Indications for Pharmacologic Therapy
Considerations on prescribing medication in pharmacologic therapy must tackle each patient’s condition’s possible dangers and importance. Healthcare practitioners should discuss these potential dangers and advantages with patients, families, and caregivers (Madaan et al., 2017). A pharmacological therapy’s psychological effects must be examined and taken into consideration. The patient should be made aware of the course of treatment, and if the drugs used or the ailment being treated affect the patient, then the time frame may be relevant.
