The American Association of Nurse Practitioners as one of the Major Certification Bodies

The Family Advanced Practitioner Register Nurses (APRN) certification bodies in USA

According to the established rules for application at ANCC, applicants are only allowed to submit their queries after they complete coursework linked to the NP part of their program. Specifically, the part of the coursework in question is expected to show the candidates’ prowess in the clinical and didactical aspects of their practice. After the specified part of the coursework is completed, candidates are admitted for the certification examination needed to become an APRN and start nursing practice accordingly.

The application requirements for the selected certification body

Presently, the application requirements for ANCC include the readiness for the organization to apply, the presence of an appropriate academic degree, and a sufficient amount of credits are needed in order to be considered a possible applicant.

Credits required from graduated school

The presence of credits obtained at the school from which the applicant has graduated is one of the foundational requirements in obtaining the ANCC status. Specifically, under the existing standards, the applicant must have at least 29 credits to be considered eligible for accreditation by the ANCC (“Renew your certification,” 2021). Furthermore, having any kinds of fellowships, grants, or any cases of awards will be considered a complementary argument in favor of the applicant receiving the ANCC permission to practice nursing.

How many CEUs from those which are mandatory?

In addition to the credits, the applicant must have enough Continuing Nursing Education points (CEUs) in order to be considered eligible for receiving the certificate. According to the current standards, a total of at least 36 contact hours, or 3.6 CEUs, is needed to gain the approval of the ANCC and receive the certificate needed for the further nursing practice.

The period for application

Remarkably, ANCC offers its candidates to submit the necessary papers for application before their graduation. The specified approach toward application helps to reduce the extent of stress that graduating students experience, while also streamlining the processing of the applications submitted by graduating students. Therefore, it is strongly advised to apply beforehand to ensure that a student has enough time to make the necessary adjustments and prepare for the certification process, as well as the challenges of the future nursing practice.

The passing test score

In order to pass for the certificate that the ANCC provides to nurses, applicants must score at least 350, although a higher score is preferable. Notably, there is a difference between the initial score based on which the candidate’s eligibility for the ANCC certificate will be judged, and the raw score obtained as a part of the pre-examination process (Board of Registered Nursing, n.d.). Specifically, the candidate’s raw score given as a result of passing the test is afterward adjusted to fit the scale of 350 or higher, with the number of correct answers being shown clearly.

How much does the certification exam cost?

Remarkably, there is a price difference between the costs for the examination for non-members of the American Nursing Association (ANA) and those belonging to it. Namely, for ANA members, the cost is set at $295, whereas the rest of applicants will have to pay $395.

How often NP recertification is due?

If the score is unsatisfactory, the applicant can retake the test 60 days after the first examination. In addition, applicants are allowed to take the test only three times a year. In addition, it is worth noting that the ANCC certificate is only legitimate for five years of practice, after which one must retake the examination and gain the license to practice nursing once again. The specified restrictions can be seen as the incentive for nurses to continue their professional development as they expand the scope and scale of their practice.
