Nurse Leadership Combined with Advocacy

The results from the completed “Nurse Manager Skills Inventory” indicate that I possess powerful competencies and concepts that can make me a successful nurse practitioner (NP). The exercise also encourages nurses to develop new skills and values in order to meet the health needs of more patients. This paper gives a detailed summary of my nurse leadership philosophy. My weaknesses and strengths are also described.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Personal and Professional Accountability

NPs should be accountable and professional. Personally, I have a strong code of ethics that guides my behaviors and practices. I always focus on the best activities and provide quality services to every patient. I respect my colleagues, support them, and guide my subordinates. I embrace every professional standard and guideline whenever addressing my patients’ needs. I focus on the outlined scope of practice for NPs. The main weakness is that my nursing philosophy is still underdeveloped. I am also incapable of delivering culturally competent services to different patients.

Career Planning

My current success as a NP is attributable to this concept. I know how to outline my career objectives and aims. I also analyze my skill sets and identify attributes that should be developed. I embrace the idea of lifelong learning in order to improve my competencies. I embrace the concept of multidisciplinary teams to meet the needs of more patients. The only weakness in this area is that I do not have a long-term career plan.

Personal Journey Disciplines

As described earlier, I engage in continuous learning in order to improve my care delivery models. I have completed various courses that make me a proficient practitioner. I also consider emerging theories, clinical guidelines, and concepts that can result in desirable medical services. I have completed short courses in areas such as first aid, leadership, and counseling. The major weakness is that I am yet to develop superior theories that can support my career goals.

Reflective Practices: Behaviors or Tenets

Personal reflection is a powerful initiative that supports the needs of nurses (Marquis & Huston, 2015). This practice empowers me to identify specific gaps and areas that should be improved. I make journal entries in order to discover concepts that are developed or underdeveloped. Lifelong learning is then pursued to acquire superior skills and ideas. I collaborate with others and engage in teams in order to improve my care delivery models. The first weakness is that I am yet to embrace the power of self-awareness. I also find it hard to seek advice and guidance from different professionals.

Advocating for Change

As a nurse working in Miami, I can advocate for change and make a difference in my unit. My superior competencies such as efficient communication and problem-solving can be introduced in the department to empower different colleagues. I can also promote positive practices such as teamwork and lifelong learning. These attributes will make it easier for caregivers to collaborate and deliver high-quality services (Harris, 2016). The concept of leadership can be introduced to ensure that different practitioners manage time efficiently, make timely decisions, and engage each other.

The unit can benefit from positive attributes such as multidisciplinary teams and cultural competencies (Harris, 2016). The targeted nurses will be guided to liaise with physicians and counselors. They will also focus on the best skills to support the needs of all patients from diverse backgrounds. Practitioners will be guided to engage in practices such as continuous learning. This initiative will make it easier for them to develop new ideas and models that can maximize their patients’ outcomes. The introduction of these changes will guide and encourage more nurses to focus on the changing needs of different individuals.

Leadership Growth

The above discussion has revealed that I possess adequate competencies that can make me a skilled provider of high-quality services. The analysis has also indicated that my cultural competencies are inadequate or ineffective. My personal objective is, therefore, to improve this skill and be in a position to achieve my goals as a nurse. This is in accordance with the idea of lifelong learning (Marquis & Huston, 2015). The achievement will eventually result in a superior nursing philosophy.

I will consider three powerful stages to achieve the intended aim. The first phase will focus on the idea of personal empowerment. During this stage, I will study widely in order to understand the true nature and importance of cultural competence. I will also interact with different professionals to acquire new ideas. The second stage is implementing or making these aspects part of my philosophy (Wong, 2015). I will liaise with more patients and workers from diverse backgrounds. The third stage is that of self-reflection. This approach will be used to monitor my achievements and gaps. I will also make such concepts part of my leadership philosophy.

Conclusion

Nurse practitioners should always work hard to develop new skills and transform their philosophies. The completed exercise has indicated that I have superior competencies that can make me successful. I will use such aspects to implement new changes in my hospital setting. I will also focus on the best approaches to improve my cultural competencies and eventually improve my leadership abilities in nursing.
