Introduction
Diabetes presents one of the most prominent issues faced by the modern healthcare system. According to statistics provided by World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), the number of people with diabetes gradually increases with time, with more than 400 million detected cases of diabetes across the globe. Diabetes mortality increased by approximately 3% in the last twenty years, but in lower-income countries, the growth of mortality cases can reach 15% (WHO, 2022). Exploring information about the health of patients with diabetes can provide valuable insights into the issues experienced by the population and existing health promotion programs that target addressing the health issue.
Discussion
Firstly, living with diabetes significantly influences an individual’s overall health because diabetes is associated with a wide range of comorbidities, such as hypertension, obesity, vision problems, and kidney disease. Next, diabetes can negatively affect individuals’ daily activities as people with diabetes experience higher risks of developing depression disorder or anxiety. Moreover, patients with diabetes are more affected by global health issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Luo et al. (2021), patients with diabetes had worse health outcomes from COVID-19 due to comorbidities. Furthermore, the research suggests that the prevalence of diabetes is significantly higher in low-income populations (Hill-Briggs et al., 2020). Therefore, patients with diabetes can face more barriers in access to health care.
Next, a significant problem in diabetes care is the number of undiagnosed people with diabetes. Thus, an important step in addressing the problem is the establishment of regular screening programs for the population. The National Diabetes Prevention Program focuses on developing partnerships between public and private organizations to prevent diabetes in the population. The program includes different tools and resources designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and increase the population’s awareness of diabetes. The program’s main benefit is that it presents a collection of cost-effective measures for diabetes prevention. However, the program is still not effective enough to significantly reduce the number of patients with diabetes.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this paper explored information about the health of patients with diabetes and defined valuable insights into the issues experienced by the population. The essay determined that diabetes can significantly affect a patient’s life due to comorbidities. Furthermore, the essay explained that a large number of undiagnosed cases of diabetes pose a serious risk to the nation’s health. Thus, the existing health promotion programs focus on diabetes prevention and increasing the public’s awareness of the issue.
