Transformational Leadership for Obesity Prevention Project

A transformational leader is a leader who does not just manage, but helps a team or company change, grow, and develop. Such a person subtly feels any changes in business, country, culture, and nature and can predict the origin, growth, and dying of any processes (Cherry, 2020). For a healthcare professional to organize an obesity prevention project, several key competencies are required.

First, the nurse should manage meaningful communication with patients. The ability to quickly build rapport with patients and their families, empathize with patients, and be responsive, given their perceived and objective cultural characteristics, will distinguish the professional. Moreover, to complete the community project to address obesity prevention, the nurse should involve the patient’s relatives and caregivers in assessing his / her health and communicating patient health information with the patient’s consent. Therefore, specialists should communicate information without using professional jargon and any moral judgments. Care plan options should be communicated to the patient in an understandable manner.

Transformational leaders must use a communication style that most fully and accurately considers the impact of the health condition on the patient’s ability to assimilate and understand information, so the community needs are fulfilled. One of the key competencies is adapting services, including evidence-based, multidisciplinary team working methods, and mobilize resources by language, cultural norms, and individual preferences of patients and their families. Therefore, the education of the multidisciplinary team’s members about patients’ characteristics and needs for health care, their behavior regarding their health, and the views of the various populations served in the institution about their diseases and treatment. To achieve the goal, nurses should provide health education appropriate to patients’ communication style and literacy, families, and repeat the information provided orally during patient visits. Well-organized communication is the main core competency of a nurse to complete a community project.

The organization of the center’s work for the prevention of obesity involves the specialists in medicine and other social fields. Therefore, a nurse needs to have the skills of working as a part of a multidisciplinary team, namely express the professional opinion and encouraging other team members, including patients, to express their views and participate in decision making. Transformational leaders should resolve differences or conflicts quickly and without any offense (Cherry, 2019). Being practical, flexible, and adaptable when working with others, focusing on achieving treatment goals rather than adhering to treatment models is also very important. Prepared and great support is helping patients gain access to the resources they need, including specialized medical care, rehabilitation, and social services, support for other patients, financial assistance and transportation. Moreover, a leader nurse should promote diversity of service providers working in multidisciplinary teams.

State nursing organizations must first be able to organize health care that will be focused on the needs of the people. The ability to create the conditions for a coherent/integrated service delivery focused on the needs of patients and their families is essential for healthcare professionals. They need to understand that effective care planning requires repeated discussions with the patient and others over an extended period. Therefore, Melissa should provide timely and effective care to patients who meet their disease treatment and health promotion needs.

With such an integrated approach to solving the problem, all transformational leaders’ characteristics are manifested. A person who can organize specialists of different profiles, understand their needs, and, as a result, provide quality service to the patient, distinguishes such a leader. It should be noted that we are talking about a center for the prevention of obesity in children. Accordingly, only with competent leadership is it possible to achieve effective results.
