Identification of Nursing Assessment Models

The article ‘Identification of Nursing Assessment Models/Tools validated in Clinical Practice for use with diverse Ethno-cultural Groups: An Integrative Review of the Literature’ by Higginbottom, Richter, Mogale, and Ortiz, Young, and Mollel (2011) is a non-experimental and correlative study. It involves the process of retrieval of qualitative data from the existing databases and deriving concrete relationships between the authenticated tools/models that are used in the various centers of clinical practice and the various ethnocultural groups in these settings. The integrative review was carried out and published in Europe and North America where the various ethnocultural linked models/tools were identified and evaluated. The data retrieval involved various types of sources, including premier referenced journals that covered nursing, allied health, and biomedical fields. The variables used included the various models/tools that were deployed within the practice of nursing. Such tools were designed for the diverse ethnic/cultural groups and the various ethnocultural groups existing in the two regions. The process of data collection involved identifying the various models/tools that were applied for nursing in various centers that were associated with ethnocultural groups. The study summarized the various models/tools with respect to their respective applications. The data collected was taken through a process of integrated review where established guidelines such as protocols and/or procedures were scrutinized. The research identified a need for intervention in integrating cultural assessment in the practice of nursing due to the continued diversity growth in the patient population. The need can be mainly attributed to the increase in global immigration in the twenty-first century. The importance of this intervention is to surmount the problem of patient safety, risk management, and inefficiency or lack of effectiveness of health care services (Higginbottom et al., 2011).
