Doctor of Nursing Practices History and Purpose
Doctor William created the Doctor of Nursing Practice in the year 2001 at a time when the highest education level for advanced practice nurses was a Master of Nursing degree (MSN). The DNP program is created to address the need for new knowledge in the face of a constantly changing healthcare environment (Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), 2018). The DNP curricula aim to create a typical master’s program by delivering evidence-based practice, system, management, and process optimization, among other vital areas. Academic nursing leaders in 2004 supported Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) reparation movement to DNP by 2015, whereby the DNP positions gained support from The American Association of College and Nursing. Positions are attained after assessing current and anticipated health needs based on the current value-based environment.
The Current State of DNP
Currently, 348 DNP programs are admitting candidates in nursing schools across the US, with an extra ninety-eight DNP programs in the planning phase, of which 48 are master’s programs, and the rest are post-baccalaureate programs. According to Campaign for Action. (2021). DNP programs are found in 50 states of the US and the District of Columbia, with other conditions like Florida, Illinois, and New York having at least ten programs. Between 2017 to 2018, the enrollment in DNP programs increased by 17.84 percent and 15.84 percent, respectively. Additionally, employers have now realized the contribution of DNP professionals in the arena of practice, and the demand for these DNP-prepared experts continues to grow.
The Future State of DNP
There is a large number of qualified graduates produced by DNP. It may be used to fix the problem of the shortage that is experienced in healthcare. Since the number of graduates has been increasing each year, if the same rate is used in enrollment, the need for advanced nurse practice will increase tremendously (Williams & Howard, 2017). Even though there is the experience of several challenges whenever educational values are raised, the AACNs dedicate to operating with clinicians, policymakers, faculty, practice and academic leaders, and inter-professional colleagues to solve those concerns. It advances DNP as one of the public changes health needs. William and Howart (2017) suggest that AACN recommends academic nursing emphasize leadership to formulate future employees and address the hindrance of completing execution of DNP for all APRNs.
Ways DNP-Prepared APRNs may help with Transformative Healthcare and Complex Healthcare Programs
Clinical healthcare demand for healthcare providers is constantly growing, demand the gap is increasing for providers. The doctorate-prepared APN will assist fill these gaps in healthcare systems (Staffilleno, Murphy& Carlson et al.,2017). DNP-prepared APNs will provide such competencies, including a strong emphasis on safety and quality, genomics and genetics clinical data analysis, and interprofessional care. The collaboration of these competencies reinforces the need for practicing doctorate education.
Advantages of Having a DNP Degree
There is current research on the value of DNP-prepared professionals, developing for the healthcare system dedicated to assessing providers’ impact on Masters’ degree APN versus DNP provider.DNP will ensure that graduate practitioners are experts and leaders in evidence-based practice (Pritham & White, 2016). The DNP- prepared APNs will improve healthcare results by facilitating the transition of the current evidence-based education into the nursing practice. The DNP-prepared APN is also at the highest level of her degree.
Finally, DNP-prepared ADNs can employ established managerial skills to assess, make plans, enact alternatives for good patient care, and restructure integrated quality care in a highly volatile compensation environment. Distinct DNP degrees are suitable for a practitioner’s career because they allow the focus on a nursing area even within the chosen APRN role and assume managerial and leadership roles in a health setting. Also, it is the level of income and more prospects to provide a tremendous contribution to competent nurses.
