Organizational values may vary depending on the type of organization. However, most organizations focus on the principles of progress and power, which allow them to set task-focused goals and create effective ways of reaching them (Manojlovich & Ketefian, 2016). Moreover, establishments also value tradition or independence, concentrating either on stability or innovation. Harmony, which revolves around people-oriented practices, maybe another basis of organizational values. Most organizations prioritize profitability, efficiency, and goal achievement as their main values.

The main responsibility of nurses is to take care of patients. Thus, according to Shahriari, Mohammadi, Abbaszadeh, and Bahrami (2013), it is important for professional nurses to have a definite understanding of the ethical values that align with their profession. Human dignity and integrity imply that nurses realize that every client is an individual person that deserves respect and adequate care. Altruism and social justice describe nurses as helpers that are ready to assist all patients regardless of their religion, race, or socioeconomic status. Nurses see people as autonomous beings with their own desires and needs that should be considered while providing care services.

Organizational values influence the way nurses interact with patients. According to Manojlovich and Ketefian (2016), the organizational practice may affect nurses’ ability to take on the responsibility or make difficult decisions. If the values of nurses and organizations align, nursing professionals may have a better experience at work, which in turn may lead to higher levels of productivity and overall job satisfaction.
According to Iacobucci, Daly, Lindell, and Griffin (2013), if a nurse feels that his or her values are being misrepresented or undermined by an organization, he or she may be discouraged from engaging in the work process and putting much effort into completing the job.

Patients’ safety may also be positively affected by organizations and nurses working towards one goal.

Workplace challenges may be resolved or ameliorated by using effective communication techniques. Listening to the opponent is the first way of hearing the arguments of the opposing side. One should deliver facts clearly and concisely to avoid confusion. Furthermore, respect should always be present in any conversation. Any challenge in communication should be discussed with giving or receiving feedback to reach an understanding and achieve a conclusion. Being empathetic to the other person’s position can reduce tension as well.

Being open-minded can also open new opportunities for collaboration with other groups. Asking other people for their ideas and inviting them to offer advice to solve one’s problem can bring people together.

Problem-solving is one of the main responsibilities in many medical professions. Communication often helps individuals to solve problems because sometimes talking to other people may resolve a conflict completely. Thus, keeping oneself from expressing negative emotions or being overly aggressive is a technique necessary in this situation. Furthermore, attentive listening along with paying attention to nonverbal cues can help an individual to receive as much information as possible. An open discussion that encourages many people to propose their ideas may result in people finding the most efficient solution to a problem.

My experience involves a hospital that was concentrated on reducing the nursing staff in order to lower spending and increase profitability. However, these values did not align with nurses’ commitment to their patients. As every nurse is devoted to delivering equal care to every patient, a smaller number of nurses were unable to care for every patient in a sufficient way. Nurses’ values of social justice and dignity were not followed.

This misalignment of values resulted in nurses being overwhelmed by the number of patients they had to treat. Nurses expressed their dissatisfaction with the job, which created multiple conflicts between the hospital and the staff. Moreover, many nurses could not participate in their duties and care for every patient adequately. Patients were not satisfied as well. They noted that the quality of care was low. Some patients confronted the working nurses and voiced their concerns, which created additional tension.
