Interprofessional Collaborative Practice


Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) is an interaction model between healthcare workers. The model of IPCP is used to unite the healthcare professionals of various backgrounds to advance the quality of medical care. The model involves improved communication between healthcare specialists and their interaction with patients and their families. This essay will focus on various aspects of IPCP, such as its overview, benefits, changes, promotion of the model, limitations of IPCP, an example of a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, and guidance of IPCP in the healthcare system.

Overview of IPCP

The interprofessional collaborative practice stands on four fundamental principles called competencies. These four core competencies characterize the preparation level of healthcare professionals for the work environment. The competencies involve:

  • Moral values and ethics: Maintaining ethics while working with professionals of various spheres and backgrounds, respecting and sharing their values.
  • Responsibilities: Clearly understanding the roles and tasks of one’s surroundings.
  • Communication: Effective communication with coworkers, patients, and their families.
  • Teamwork: Working in a team with shared values and efficient usage of resources (Coufal & Woods, 2018).

The competencies act as pillars that support the model of IPCP, as they are the fundamental rules of the model.

Benefits of IPCP

IPCP is directed toward enhancing communication in all job sectors, including effective contact with facility employees, patients, their caretakers, and families. The well-coordinated team is faster, uses the resources effectively, and has increased performance and a high customer satisfaction rate in any sphere. The model of IPCP is efficient as it involves a team-based approach with clear roles and responsibilities designed to create a coherent work with minimal deviations. Implementing IPCP increases the rate of customer satisfaction by showing effective care towards patients by working rapidly and precisely (Shirey et al., 2020). The team-related approach of IPCP has a wide range of advantages due to its clear guidelines and effective interprofessional communication and collaboration system.

How IPCP Changes Healthcare Delivery

Nowadays, IPCP is known as an innovative model of enhancing healthcare quality due to its effectiveness. The team-based approach of IPCP focuses on enhancing teamwork to improve delivering health care. The first phase is setting clear goals for the team by creating united missions for the whole team and individual tasks for each employee. The next phase is about vividly defining the roles of team members. The process also involves improving decision-making through team members’ discussions. Last but not least, the approach focuses on interpersonal relations between all the facility participants. Factors to Support IPCP

The healthcare arena, perhaps, involves dealing with more stress than other spheres of employment, as a cost of a mistake may be too high. Moreover, a stressful environment may disrupt communication, affecting overall performance. IPCP may be effective in facilities where teams need clear and objective direction. Establishing proper leadership and motivating the team by giving them a clear purpose and clearly defining the team’s targets is a powerful principle of IPCP (Golom & Schreck, 2018). Facilities that have implemented IPCP have a clear set of objectives that includes each employee’s characteristics and are designed to maintain high-quality healthcare delivery.

Limitations of IPCP

Interprofessional collaboration practice has its barriers, similar to other models of improving interpersonal communication. Communication may be difficult in any situation involving humans, as everyone has their background, beliefs, and priorities. The main barrier to effective IPCP may be the workspace where the equipment, space, and methods of communications are widely shared. This situation involves properly prioritizing the tasks and roles of the employees. An environment with different healthcare professionals gathering and communicating in the same area may be the most challenging (Morgan et al., 2015). The limitation could be addressed by establishing clear guidelines and emphasizing the urgent issues.

Example of the Baccalaureate-prepared Nurse

A recently graduated nurse could face some challenging situations by dealing with the natural stress of the workplace. The knowledge given in universities is essential, but it is perhaps more theoretical, and the workplace often gives the natural practical experience. Working in an interprofessional team could be extremely difficult at the beginning of a medical journey, but proper leadership and navigation could accelerate the adaptation process. A vital figure in the head nurse position could massively help the fresh nurse delve into the workplace (Shirey et al., 2020). By following the directions of experienced supervisors, baccalaureate-prepared nurses could clearly understand their responsibilities and perform at the best level.

Healthcare delivery is improved since medical centers using IPCP effectively utilize empathy. Patient satisfaction is increased as the staff cares about them, shares their values, and engages closely. The clinical outcomes have improved as a result of effective collaboration in the workplace Golom & Schreck, 2018). IPCP improves the process of clinical practice as it focuses on people, prioritizing their wellbeing.


IPCP is a general guideline based on improving the coordination of the team by setting clear objectives, distributing responsibilities, and encouraging effective communication. Medical facilities practicing IPC have shown better results as the teams are well-coordinated. The usage of IPCP in a sphere of medicine is crucial, as the quality of healthcare is greatly enhanced due to the effective communication between colleagues and patients.
