American Nurses Association Mission, Advocacy, COVID-19 Policy & Workforce

Mission of the Organization

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is dedicated to enhancing the nation’s health and well-being as well as growing the nursing career through policy advocacy, professional growth, and support for all nurses across specialties. According to the ANA’s website, it aims to “empower nurses to drive change and improve health” (ANA, 2023). This mission reflects its commitment to addressing health policy challenges affecting nurses as well as the broader healthcare system.

The ANA’s mission is closely aligned with the goals of health policy advocacy. ANA empowers nurses to drive change, allowing them to actively shape policies that impact healthcare delivery, patient outcomes, and the nursing workforce. The ANA’s emphasis on health improvement highlights the importance of legislative actions to reduce healthcare disparities, expand access to care, and expand public health programs.

Key Nursing/Health Issues Important to ANA

The ANA has been involved in efforts to address policy issues related to the COVID-19 epidemic. According to Chan et al. (2021), these include advocating for appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for nurses, supporting legislation that expands access to healthcare during this pandemic, and promoting evidence-based infection control and prevention protocols. The ANA advocates for policies that safeguard the safety and welfare of nursing staff.

This includes addressing workplace violence, reminding nurses to seek mental health care, and advocating for proper staffing levels to prevent burnout and exhaustion. The ANA stresses the importance of addressing social determinants of health and advancing health equity. The organization urges legislation to reduce healthcare disparities, expand access for underprivileged communities, and remove systemic barriers that hinder health equity.

ANA’s Work on COVID-19 Policy Issues

The ANA was also active in advocating for policies that supported nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to Choi et al. (2020), the American Nurses Association urged increased manufacturing and distribution of PPE to ensure access to the necessary preventive gear when handling patients with COVID-19. The ANA has supported legislative measures to provide financial relief to healthcare facilities and frontline workers and increase access to telehealth services. The American Nurses Association has offered nurses and healthcare organizations best practice recommendations and tools for COVID-19 prevention and management. This includes publishing policy briefs, hosting webinars, and sharing information via their website and social media outlets.

How Nurses Can Get Involved

Being a member of the American Nurses Association gives one access to policy advocacy tools, educational resources, and networking opportunities. Advocacy campaigns, participation in committees, and interaction with lawmakers are some ways through which members can influence healthcare policies. The association has state and local chapters that enable nurses to participate in grassroots lobbying and community involvement initiatives.

Lobbying, town hall meetings, and legislative visits are among the activities that nurses shall undertake through their respective state nursing associations. Nurses pursuing policy advocacy can benefit from policy fellowships offered by the organization as well as leadership development programs for this purpose. These programs offer an opportunity for nurses to learn about policy-making processes, develop leadership skills, and collaborate with legislators on critical healthcare issues.

Nursing Workforce Diversity

To achieve health equity and reduce disparities in health outcomes, ANA is deeply committed to fostering diversity in the nursing profession. As noted by Young & Guo (2020), ANA’s advocacy has multiple facets, including support for recruitment programs targeting underrepresented groups, promoting equitable policies, enhancing cultural competency training within nursing curricula, conducting diversification studies, and working with diverse communities.

Reflection

From my perspective, the ANA’s mission and advocacy efforts illustrate the organization’s dedication to empowering nurses and influencing healthcare policy. Their efforts on COVID-19 policy issues demonstrate a proactive approach to assisting nurses on the front lines. The American Nurses Association is a strong advocate for nurses and a driving force in healthcare policy reform. Furthermore, the ANA’s emphasis on member participation and leadership development indicates its dedication to mobilizing nurses to effect good change in healthcare policy and practice. The organization is a powerful advocate for nurses and plays an important role in healthcare policy.
