Article Summary
In their 2016 article on the theory of mind and executive control deficits, Gökçen et al. provided significant insights into the correlation between cognition. In this light, Gökçen et al. (2016) aim to delineate the underlying concepts that define the relationships among executive control, theory of mind (ToM), and autism spectrum disorder traits in typically developing teenagers. However, to achieve its primary objective, the study employs a comprehensive assessment series, including a cross-sectional research design, to discern the correlation between executive function and ToM.
Through this technique, a deep view of the variables shows that people struggling to cope with Autism-like traits have difficulty making better decisions and showing empathy. The underlying issue in this relationship is that thinking abilities are closely connected to how a person comprehends others’ perspectives and feelings. With these insights, it is possible to draw important understandings of how autism shapes individuals’ social and cognitive functioning.
Study Participants
The study participants comprised 121 typically developing individuals and adolescents aged 16 to 35 years. This population comprised University subject pools and sixth-form college students from London. In their final group, 15% were male, and IQ scores ranged from 72 to 129 (Gökçen et al., 2016). This heterogeneous population offered an opportunity to investigate the associations among executive control, theory of mind, and traits relevant to autism across different age groups and at different levels of education.
Procedure
Throughout the study, the participants were asked to complete various assessments and tasks to determine their capabilities across multiple cognitive domains. The evaluations were made by assessing the executive control, theory of mind, and other related cognitive functions. In the first part, participants were asked to complete tasks to rate their behaviors towards ASD traits on the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and alexithymia traits on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). However, study 2 involved a computer game that assessed decaying cognitive flexibility in executive functioning.
Diversity Issues
The authors failed to address diversity specifically, which left it unclear. Diversity and inclusivity, the two values Ruzycki and Ahmed (2022) consider, focus on individuals rather than on socio-economic status, age, or ethnicity during data collection. Consequently, the sole impure relationship between these concepts is that they refer to the observed gender imbalance in the sample, which was predominantly composed of psychology department students, resulting in a considerable female bias (Gökçen et al., 2016). In this light, the authors revealed the possible mental implications of executive controls and mentalizing deficits among genders with elevated autism levels.
Theoretical Approach
The authors resorted to a theoretical approach as the method for describing and understanding the psychological issues at hand. They used both developmental and cognitive psychology perspectives to examine the link between theory of mind, executive control, and autism traits in young adults and teenagers (Gökçen et al., 2016). This strategy provided them with the option to understand their findings in light of the main cognitive and social development theories.
Research Design
The study adopted a cross-sectional design to examine how executive control, theory of mind, and participants’ autism traits are connected. With this design, they could collect information from people at a single point in time and then use it to identify relationships among the variables.
Statistical Analysis
The authors incorporated theoretical frameworks to understand how empathic processing, executive function, and autism traits are interwoven. Among the statistical methods used in the study are correlations, hierarchical regressions, and bivariate correlations. In this light, it employs hierarchical regression analyses to test the hypothesized associations between variables.
Strengths
One of the key strengths of the study lies in the application of the tested theory of mind and executive function. Hence, the effectiveness and precision of the output results are guaranteed. The hierarchical regression also enabled a detailed look at how autism traits, cognitive empathy, and executive control interact. In this regard, this analysis could precisely pinpoint these relationships. Moreover, a representative sample of the broader population enhances the generalizability of the research findings.
Limitations
The study presents some limitations, the first being the gender disproportion in the study group. The study raises questions about the generalizability to the entire population (Gökçen et al., 2016). In addition, even though experience-based assessment may show much about the environment, it may not be reflected in the real world of social interactions; therefore, in-depth research is required.
Recommendations
What I would do if I repeated a similar study would be to correct the gender imbalance in my sample. Shea et al. (2022) state that this will be accomplished by the selective recruitment of diverse groups. Thus, to get a more balanced representation, the number of male participants will have to increase. Further, I will also consider a wider age range to identify developmental differences in the theory of mind and executive function across the lifespan. Also, using longitudinal techniques can make it possible to track these skills over time and their relationship with autism manifestations.
