Nursing: Dorothea Orem Self-Care Theory

Introduction

Healthcare is founded on the principles and guidelines that help medical professionals provide quality care to patients, ensuring positive outcomes. For the purpose of increasing patient satisfaction, the healthcare field has been open to the theories developed by nurses and other professionals.

Discussion

For instance, the self-care theory proposed by Dorothea Orem is a novel nursing approach. The self-care idea places a strong emphasis on self-care as the core, with the overall purpose of empowering patients to accept responsibility for their own care (Tang et al., 2022). Based on Orem’s philosophy, a healthcare professional emphasizes being people-oriented, which can assist patients in enhancing their capacity for self-nursing and maintaining a positive emotional condition (Luebbert & Boyd, 2022). Patients’ educational requirements should be taken into account, and suitable nursing care models must be implemented in order to deliver adequate patient instruction.

The concept can describe type-2 diabetes as a disease that requires self-care education in the context of dietary, physical, and psychological requirements. In terms of my chosen phenomenon of interest, type-2 diabetes, Orem’s concept explains the condition because of which the patient requires the support of life processes, promotion of proper functioning, and maintaining of healthy development progress (Rakhshani et al., 2022). Aside from this, the condition requires constant prevention, regulation, and treatment of the disease states and wounds, prevention of impairments, and promotion of positive sentiments (Rakhshani et al., 2022). Moreover, the theory helps predict and monitor type-2 diabetes with several steps, as described by Orem. The first step is to determine whether the patient requires self-care education, and the second step should target the reasons why there are self-care deficits and ways that a healthcare professional can help the individual (Alligood, 2021). Therefore, such a theory helps a medical expert predict the outcomes of type-2 diabetes by ensuring the patient follows the recommendations.

There are many studies that apply Dorothea Orem’s self-care theory as the basis to see the effects of quality education and care on patient outcomes. For instance, the study by Khademian and colleagues (2020) sought to ascertain the impact of self-care education based on Orem’s theory of self-care on patients with hypertension. The research was conducted in Mamasani, Iran, in 2015 (Khademian et al., 2020). Eighty patients were chosen by convenient selection and randomly assigned to two groups: the control group and the experimental group (Khademian et al., 2020). The latter underwent a nursing education program that was founded on Orem’s nursing theory and tailored to the requirements of the individuals (Khademian et al., 2020). The findings demonstrated that teaching hypertension individuals self-care centered on Orem’s theory could enhance their quality of life (Khademian et al., 2020). Consequently, it is advised that nurses use this approach when providing outpatient treatment for patients.

Conclusion

Hence, the healthcare industry has been open to the ideas produced by nurses and other professionals in an effort to improve patient satisfaction. An innovative nursing strategy is Dorothea Orem’s self-care theory. The concept may be used to define type-2 diabetes as a condition that necessitates knowledge about one’s own nutritional, physical, and psychological needs. Orem’s notion describes the situation that necessitates the patient’s support of life processes, promotion of normal functioning, and maintenance of healthy development progress in terms of my selected phenomena of interest, type-2 diabetes. According to Orem, the theory also aids in the prediction and monitoring of type-2 diabetes through a number of procedures.
