Medical Management of Unintended Pregnancies

Unintended pregnancies occur as a result of unwanted or mistimed conception. This concept helps in the understanding of unmet family planning needs in the population. Many unintended pregnancies stem from the failure to use contraception or the inconsistent or incorrect use of it. In this regard, it becomes imperative that healthcare providers sensitize women of reproductive age on the need for birth control and proper use, including the health risks associated with unintended pregnancies.

Proper education of women on contraception and the risks of unintended pregnancies would promote reproductive health. About half of the pregnancies in America fall under the unintended group, which then triggers an urgent need to deal with the issue to curb unnecessary dangers (Healthy People, 2020). According to the author, unintended pregnancies carry risks such as low birth weight, family stress, and postpartum depression (Healthy People, 2020). Therefore, medical practitioners must educate women on the need for family planning, including its proper use. Also, with the knowledge of women’s reproductive life plans, nurses would determine their counseling and reproductive health needs (Healthy People, 2020). This step would help manage unintended pregnancies considerably.

The management of unintended pregnancies requires significant input from medical practitioners, such as helping women understand reproductive and sexual health. Women of reproductive age get to know the need for family planning and how to use it. This move lowers the rate of unintended pregnancies, including health risks such as postpartum depression, low birth weight, and family stress. With that said, developing a comprehensive solution to the issue of unintended pregnancies would require the inclusion of men in the sensitization and counseling processes.
