Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and China’s COVID-19 Strategies

The webinar How Nations Respond discusses the responses of nations to COVID-19 crisis and it provides many insights as to how important the culture and the environment are when it comes to addressing and solving health crises. The focus of the webinar is on Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and China (University of California Television (UCTV), 2020). These countries resulted to be the most effective in terms of the measures that they introduced when the pandemic hit them. This, in many senses, can be explained by the culture of these countries, as discipline and law abidance are at the core of the cultures of Asian nations, particularly the ones discussed in the webinar.

This aspect helped these countries to lead the world COVID management progress and implement all the necessary measures, as the citizens of these countries were willing to collaborate. On the other hand, these countries already had an environment with the focus on human health, which made the process of fighting the pandemic easier. Some of the Asian countries, such as South Korea, initially prioritized early intervention, which was later used during the pandemic as well.

The webinar also places emphasis on the necessity to foster international culture and environment of cooperation. Unfortunately, the lack of culture of cooperation can hinder the progress of any country regarding the implementation of health practices at the public level. For example, the webinar highlights how the lack of collaboration regarding control of the export and supply of pharmaceuticals during the COVID crisis endangered the pandemic management in many countries (University of California Television (UCTV), 2020). This issue demonstrates that when cultures do not prioritize human lives the implementation of effective health practices will be hard to achieve.
