Hospital Social Media Use: Benefits, Patient Engagement, and Strategy Suggestions

Personal Opinion

As an Operating Room Nurse Manager at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, part of the Northwell Health system, I use social media both personally and professionally. I follow reputable healthcare accounts on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn to stay up to date on the latest advancements in surgical practices, healthcare innovations, and management strategies. Social media has proven invaluable for networking with peers, sharing knowledge, and learning from others’ experiences. Personally, I find it a powerful tool for advocacy, education, and raising awareness about health issues. While cautious about privacy and professionalism, I believe in leveraging social media to enhance healthcare delivery and community engagement.

Social Media Use Benefits

Social media revolutionizes healthcare by enabling hospitals to engage and inform a wide patient community. The interactive nature fosters discussions on health, wellness, and hospital services, surpassing traditional media. With over 75% of Americans using social media to research health and nearly 90% seeking health information on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the potential impact is vast (Foster, 2021). Social media advertising doubles conversion rates compared to other media, underscoring the need to tailor strategies to each platform (Digitalis, 2023). Furthermore, online reputation management is crucial, as most patients rely heavily on online opinions when choosing healthcare providers.

Utilizing social media allows the hospital to boost patient involvement, enhance the accessibility and spread of health-related information, and cultivate a helpful online community. This engagement not only aligns with the hospital’s commitment to excellent care but also establishes it as an innovative leader in modern healthcare (Foster, 2021). The capacity to distribute health content, encourage interactive dialogue, and tailor health messages offers a crucial means of improving patient satisfaction and fostering community trust.

Suggestions

To boost our hospital’s social media presence, I suggest the following strategies. Firstly, prioritizing engagement by crafting personalized content will address common patient inquiries and promptly respond to comments, fostering trust (Kotler et al., 2021). Secondly, leveraging patient reviews will highlight quality care and address negative feedback transparently (Foster, 2021). Lastly, sharing health information through engaging formats such as infographics and live Q&A sessions can educate the public and make complex health topics more understandable.
