Effective Communication and Leadership in Nursing Management

Communication is a central element of the role of nurse managers, given the complex nature of healthcare and the need to accurately delegate responsibilities to team members based on patients’ needs. A nurse leader should provide their colleagues with clear tasks and objective-oriented assignments, which is impossible without substantial interpersonal competencies (Marquis & Huston, 2021). Furthermore, communication directly relates to effective delegation because it requires transparent responsibilities and expectations for team members.

Among leadership roles and management functions, some of the most critical ones include transparency and recognition. The former means that communication when delegating tasks must be clear, easy to understand, and detailed to minimize potential misunderstandings and human mistakes (Marquis & Huston, 2021). In such a sensitive field as nursing, it is essential to be as specific and transparent as possible. Regarding management functions, recognizing and rewarding employees is a beneficial practice that enhances retention, motivation, and organizational performance (Marquis & Huston, 2021). This metric is not nursing-specific, but it is still critical to ensure that employees feel welcomed in the workplace through tangible and intangible rewards.

Two-way communication is a critical leadership role because it assures a consistent cycle of updates and feedback. Similar to the discussed recognition, it makes employees feel that management listens to their concerns and strives to improve the workplace (Marquis & Huston, 2021). In most cases, it also positively affects motivation, leading workers to be more productive in favorable environments (Marquis & Huston, 2021).

Other factors, such as transparency, evaluation of both strengths and weaknesses, communication skills, and employee engagement, also contribute to effective performance appraisal. Finally, deficiency coaching might be necessary in some cases when employees continually demonstrate a lack of competencies. While this approach might not be the most effective for organizational culture, it can help create a disciplined work environment by improving employees’ skills.
