About health promotion model

- Who developed the model
Health promotion model is centered on the idea of helping and encouraging people to make better and health decisions. This involves motivating them to be consistent when it comes to their health. Nola J. Pender (1941-present) is one of the prominent theorists in the field of health care sector. She developed one of the most applied theories in the health practice. Health promotion Model, which was established in 1982, remains relevant in the modern day health care practice. In this case, the health promotion model emphasizes helping people to achieve better health behavior. There are many ways this theory can increase the level of knowledge about certain topics and make a certain contribution to topic such as Family Nursing Practice. Family nurse practitioners, as well as nurses and other medical employees, must understand the differences between concepts such as research and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). Thus, this theory sheds light on how people can be helped to make better and healthier decisions.
Approaches to health promotion
- People’s lifestyle and experiences affect their health outcomes
- Psychological health
- Social health
- Cultural health
Since Health Promotion Model is based on the concept that people’s experiences influence their health outcomes, the model focuses on learning people’s attitudes about their health. While looking at various aspects such as people’s lifestyle and experiences affect their health outcomes, psychological health, social health, and cultural health, this theory helps to produce new knowledge or evaluate existing information relying on it when EBP is about translating evidence that has been collected and its application for clinical decision making (Conner, 2014). The theory helps practitioners to ask some questions that how them understand their patients. Regarding the basis of the selected approach, this EBP project can contribute to professional nursing in various ways. This method helps make certain conclusions in a short time.
Health promotion model assumptions
- People strive to be in control of their behavior
- People work to improve their environment
- Health care professionals influence people’s behaviors
- Self-initiated changes are important to people’s lives
According to Pender (2011), this health promotion theory/model has various assumptions. These presumptions stem from the notion that people try to manage their behavior, that people want to make their surroundings better, that health care providers have an impact on people’s behavior, and that self-initiated improvements are significant in people’s lives. In relation to EBP, especially in family nursing practice, this theory can be used to understand what steps must be taken to prevent health complications such as obesity, gastritis, and heart problems (Appleton et al., 2018; Moghaddam et al., 2015). Researchers can use this theory to make evaluation that is needed to promote changes and develop future research regarding selected practice arrangements and available resources. Concerns, such as nursing concerns should be somewhat based on the current problems that may be faced by patients and staff when health care services are offered. The theory helps practitioner to ask relevant questions that can guide their practice. These questions must be answered as a result of the collection of material using mixed research methods in the EBP project frame. The expected results should be useful for future practice settings because they can help recognize the main causes of existing problems and discuss solutions that might be offered. In most cases, working on a selected EBP project and the creation of literature reviews can be developed in several stages. First, it is necessary to identify credible databases for this type of work.
As a family nurse practitioner, someone must utilize various databases such as medscape, sage publications, plos, and pubmed. These sources can be used to collect adequate materials from case studies, direct intervention, and evidence-based reviews. To facilitate this search, key provisions be used depending on the topic under investigation. Theoretical Framework The choice of theoretical framework is an important step for any study. The need to improve the concept of nursing is not an easy task, and awareness of special theories can facilitate the task and guide a researcher. The Health Promotion Model, which is the theory selected for this framework paints a clear picture on why models are important in nursing practice.
Pender (2011) recognizes that this theory help measuring the cognitive and psychological factors of various patients in family nursing practice. This theory has pros and cons that can determine the investigation of any variables of any study under investigation. Thus, looking at various aspects suggested by the theory in the sections above can help researchers to shape their studies. However, at times, it is worth noting that the choice of the theoretical framework is not always supported by all researchers because of the difficulty of falsifying it and its problematic validity.
