The Systems Theory in Nursing Practice

Systems theory and complexity science affect the role of the nurse practitioner (NP) in multiple ways. For instance, adopting a systems theory will enhance the quality of nursing care that the NP provides to patients. The care quality will be improved because the NP will understand the complex adaptive systems that affect nursing. Comprehension of systems theory enables NPs to understand the boundaries, perspectives, and interrelationships in nursing practice (Olsson et al., 2020). The problems that NPs face have increasingly become complex, which cannot be solved by simple solutions.

Additionally, systems theory will enable NPs to solve problems by viewing them as a part of a bigger dynamic system. To adequately care for patients, NPs have to understand the perspectives, boundaries, and interrelationships of the patient such as body systems, medical equipment, and environmental factors. Similarly, complexity science offers ways to understand the multifaceted behaviors of a healthcare organization. NPs can benefit from complexity science by comprehending how the parts of care provision are interconnected. NPs can also utilize complexity science to reduce errors by anticipating unpredictable outcomes (Olsson et al., 2020). Complexity science enables NPs to comprehend all critical system specifics such as the relationships between the nasogastric tube, microbe, and the patient with no burden of the underlying details.

I am satisfied with the level of interprofessional collaboration for the NP in the environments that I observed. NPs would help some patients with chronic disease management and complex care when they collaborated with medical practitioners. Additionally, NPs increased the skills and knowledge of team members through one-on-one teaching. Overall, when NPs collaborated with medical practitioners, patient safety and integrated care were increased by helping with unexpected patient outcomes.

NPs often practice under physician supervision within a specified area. Florida permits advanced practice nurses to carry out their duties according to their knowledge and education. NPs in Florida perform professional nursing practice and other specific actions such as prescription, medical treatment and diagnosis, nursing treatment, and nursing diagnosis. However, the state lags in its practice as it restricts NPs from practicing which makes them underutilized (Toney-Butler & Martin, 2018). One way to facilitate change would be to provide evidence-based practice in the state and submit it to the state’s nursing board.
