The Nurse Manager: Roles and Responsibilities

The nurse manager, who is the primary character in the provided scenario probably allocates too much work to his/her employees daily. Consequently, employees are unable to balance their life and work. Additionally, the primary character possibly does not recognize his employees as it is critical in employee inspiration and retention. Lastly, the organization might have a poor company culture resulting in demotivated employees and high turnover.

Other persons involved include nursing staff and patients. The nursing staff is vital in welcoming and making newcomers feel comfortable at work. If the nursing team is not receptive, new employees will constantly want to leave. Patients are significant in the scenario since healthcare workers exist to serve patients. Therefore, a demotivated nursing team will lead to decreased patient satisfaction and poor outcomes.

The nurse manager can strive to change the organizational culture, establish a good relationship with nurses, ensure recognition of workers, and create a healthy environment for employees. A good organizational culture will result in a happier, more motivated, and loyal nursing staff.

First, the most significant leadership competence to assist Michael in his situation is effective communication. Clear communication will enable me to listen and understand Michael’s frustration and guide him on the way forward. Emotional intelligence is another key leadership competency that will help me to respond to Michael. A leader must have a sense of emotional intelligence to manage individuals and to actively listen to their concerns. Lastly, the ability to manage stress and conflict is a leadership competency that would be helpful in this situation. It is required in creating a safe and healthy working environment where individuals can flourish.

My role as a nurse leader in this situation is to create a safe and healthy working environment where everyone’s opinions are listened to. I would apply a combination of effective communication and emotional intelligence to listen to Michael and assist accordingly. I would also try to impose change if need be to ensure that everyone is allowed to flourish and prosper in their nursing career.

Michael should be actively involved in creating a good relationship with his team by establishing proper communication skills. He should have the emotional intelligence to understand how to bring forward his ideas in the most accurate way to foster an understanding between him and his team. Michael has an active role in learning the existing organizational culture to enable him to have an easy time at work.
