Smoking is a bad habit that brings about detrimental health issues that may lead to severe diseases or even death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.3 billion people on Earth smoke tobacco or similar substances. Smoking kills over 8 million people a year. The medical community has a consensus about tobacco use as one of the most widespread and hazardous practices for human health. According to their reports, smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, ectopic pregnancies, arthritis, and colorectal cancer. All of these diseases have the potential to ruin a person’s life. Treating them is associated with significant expenditures that not many could take. Medical care for smokers costs 289 billion dollars a year worldwide. While many smokers may continue their practice for decades before consequences get to them, the impact on their health, in the end, is always significant. Finally, tobacco use is dangerous not only to smokers but also to the people around them. Over 1.2 million deaths around the world are associated with exposure to smokers. The most vulnerable individuals include children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with a history of acute or chronic lung diseases, such as asthma. Finally, the habit brings about social stigma. Avid smokers tend to have yellow fingers, poor breath and are a known cause of littering in public places, which causes others to shun and ridicule them. It leads to a degree of social isolation, seeking the company of other smokers, and exposing oneself to the detrimental effects of active and passive smoking. Smoking is harmful to one’s health, family, finances, social status, and the community at large. Quit smoking today.
