Introduction
The nurse education process should incorporate various practices to allow the nurse to obtain a different spectrum of knowledge and skills. This essay will represent the author’s experience in their nursing practice and particular learning philosophy. A personal philosophy on nursing education is vital for the nurse due to the following particular goals in learning while conducting clinical practice.
Hands-On Learning in Environments Outside of “Med-Surg” Nursing
While participating in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, I have experienced significant changes in my professional skills and elaborated a particular philosophy of nursing education. My approach focuses on practical knowledge and experience that the nurses can obtain through specific hands-on learning in environments outside of medical-surgical nursing. I want to highlight that this method allows nurses to obtain vital skills that cannot be achieved in standard treatment environments.
For example, as one of the significant components of hands-on learning, it is essential to underline pediatric practices that allow nurses to communicate with various patients constantly. As an example of how it facilitates professional practice, one can state the need to cope with innovative treatment methods during nurses’ practical work. For instance, I practiced using telehealth in particular situations to provide patients with pre-surgical consultations and mental health support. Therefore, I learned how to use it in medical-surgical nursing and will be able to implement this technique in my future career.
Testing Nursing Concepts and Theories
In addition, another vital component of the chosen philosophy of nursing education is an opportunity to test various nursing theories by trying them within my nursing practice. Remarkably, I had a chance to research and understand different aspects of Jean Watson’s theory, in which the author states the need for sincere and close communication between the healthcare provider and the patient (Doherty, 2020).
As a result, the treatment’s effectiveness will be increased exponentially (Doherty, 2020). I had a chance to practice this theory while communicating with patients. The results showed that their openness caused by mutual sincerity allowed me to obtain essential data regarding the person’s concerns, feelings, and mental state to construct a qualitative treatment plan based on this information. I learned how to deal with problematic patients and follow Watson’s theory while trying to find mutual understanding and sincerity.
Professional Goals and Clinical Practice
While working as a nurse, I aim to obtain different skills to conduct efficient and qualitative patient treatment. However, my primary goal is to earn a certification as an adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care nurse (CCRN). It is essential to me that I have enough knowledge and skills, both practical and theoretical, to take the required exams and obtain this certification to be able to provide patients with critical care nursing (Snarkynurses, 2021). My other goals assume to address the primary components of the medical nursing profession, such as health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance. I need to become an organ transplant nurse in the future. Notably, the severe requirements and certifications needed to obtain this profession concerning knowledge such as immunosuppression factors, organ structures, and others (McGuinness et al., 2019). While having CCRN, I can work as a certified organ transplant nurse.
Responsibility and Accountability in The Online Learning Environment
Among specific characteristics of online learning, it is essential to highlight the person’s ability to be engaged and concentrated in the educational process. Notably, it is challenging for me to be focused entirely due to staying outside of the classroom setting. The lack of live communication between the teacher and the students can harm the learning outcomes. However, online learning provides the nurse with a flexible schedule when they can manage their time and set priorities. It is vital to mention that my occupation assumes a full-time intensive care unit (ICU) nurse.
In other words, many working hours and limited free time cause a particular stress level for me. The online learning environment provides me with many flexible options. In addition, it increases my responsibility and accountability while allowing me to track my time and construct the most appropriate studying approach to enhance my nursing skills. I am entirely responsible for my courses and can focus on subjects where I have specific drawbacks and need to learn material promptly.
Ability to Provide Scholarly Work
Throughout the program, one of my primary tasks was to conduct comprehensive research on essays and assignments. This practice allowed me to obtain vital knowledge of structuring scholarly works and the skill of qualitatively delivering the idea and central aspects of the work. I have learned how to work with references, implement vital citations supporting the author’s ideas, and provide the reader with essential statistics.
In addition, I had a particular experience with last semester’s Clinical Immersion. During this practice, I was involved in research conducted over 15 hours. This work taught me how to gather data and find crucial resources. Moreover, after completing the work, I had to present it and my findings to my nursing unit. I have learned how to defend my opinions and convey my work’s main ideas directly and effectively to introduce the audience to my results.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is essential to state the vitality of the skills obtained due to practical experience. Direct communication with patients allowed me to train specific skills and cope with new technologies like Telehealth. Moreover, I gained significant knowledge regarding participation in scholarly works and analyzing various materials concerning the nursing profession. In addition, I have experienced online learning and understood its advantages in being more responsible in studying.
