Nursing Theory and Its Importance to Practice

Introduction

Any profession or discipline is built upon solid theoretical frameworks and underpinnings. The foundation of nursing practice is essentially reflected in nursing theory. This makes it more likely that the field will establish a position for itself in the multifaceted and rapidly changing world of healthcare development (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Additionally, it aids in establishing nursing as a distinct field from medicine and associated disciplines and aids nurses in comprehending their patients and their requirements.

Nursing Theory Importance to Nursing Profession

Nursing theory is the cornerstone of nursing in the modern world. This is crucially influencing the sector and enabling the profession to grow and educate more nurses. The nursing theory offers a variety of models to guide nurses in providing compassionate care that enhances patient outcomes. The theory aims to simplify the nuanced relationship that nurses have with their line of work by comprehending the connections between nursing, patients, health, and the environment (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Thus, it drives the development and establishes the foundations of the profession.

Nursing Theory Importance to Nurse Practitioners

In modern healthcare settings, nursing theory is particularly important to nurse practitioners. From the initial metaparadigm notions to the creation and application of middle-level theories that are more specialized to the issues they are researching to inform their work, nurse practitioners contribute to the evolution of the field (Iskandarani et al., 2012). They may impact change at the local, state, federal, and even international levels because of their specific understanding. For this reason, nursing theory is a valuable resource for nurse practitioners.

Conclusion

Nursing theory enables nurses to explain what they do for patients and why they do it, which enhances the quality of care. As a result, the profession should keep using nursing theories to direct their clinical care. It is helpful for the development of nursing practice and healthcare in general. Moreover, focus on nursing practice is a crucial element in educating the next generation of nursing professionals.
