The research given herein is an overview of the role of nurses in global health, in the emerging face of nursing migration. It begins with an introduction to nursing migration and an overview of the perspectives in the current global migration. The paper also considers what causes the need for nursing migration and how it has affected the industry. The research largely focuses on the contribution or role that nurses to play in the global health sector. Rather than just being the face of the health sector, when interacting with the clients, the paper focuses on what other roles the nurses need be tasked with, to see the global growth and substantial developments in the industry and more so the integration of the industry worldwide. The last two paragraphs are generally an overview of my personal belief regarding the nursing migration as requested in the instructions. It generally centers on the positive light that the nursing migration can be viewed in.
Nursing migration just like any profession has largely been considered a reserve of professionals from less developed or developing countries to the industrialized countries. This perspective is gradually changing, with nurses from well-industrialized nations moving to the developing nations. Migration is done in the hope of better employment or gaining professional development ( Kingma, 2001 par 1). Other reasons include search for better working conditions and salaries, but this denies the country that educated these nurses an opportunity to enjoy their services. Others will impose that it is usually an important part of globalization where there is an integration of workforce from around the globe. The nursing profession has been consolidated, as there is skill integration with nurses coming home from foreign countries having additional perspectives, skills, and experience (Seloilwe 2005, p 1)
A global nurse does not necessarily imply working outside your country. It also refers to those who are engaged in healthcare systems that promote worldwide development in the profession. It implies nursing activities that are undertaken to strengthen the international healthcare infrastructure (Kulwicki, 2013, par 1). Nurses have certain roles in the global healthcare systems. Shaping of policy concerning how best to give health care and developing mechanism that help build and improve health capacity in the world is one such role of nurses (Wood, 2013 para3). They should not just be visible while administering medical care, but rather should be engaged in the process that defines them and their profession. This is a step towards having a system that is perfectly coordinated and moves towards establishing high standards of international healthcare.
Global nurses are in the best position to identify the economic realities that bring about impact in the global health (Gwen 2013 p2), and more so identify ways they can improve access to healthcare and reduce disparities. The current nursing education system has developed to include universal programmes that bring students closer to the diverse nature of health systems. This brings them to a position where it becomes easier to identify persistent problems impacting negatively on the healthcare systems and try to bring a global solution to a local need. This will go a long way in improvement of the healthcare systems.
The global migration of nurses need not be viewed as a path taken to attain personal improvements. It s to be taken on a perspective of bringing the healthcare world closer and integrating the systems that will help oversee the much needed growth in the systems. In today’s world, nurses are migrating from developing countries to the developed nations and vice versa, this means that there is an integration of systems and proliferation towards a global perspective. This has also led to the improvement of economic status for the nursing community as nations are trying to retain the particular skill sets they have invested in through education.
Rather than be seen as a way of developing nations losing out, nursing migration is helping bring health systems closer steering towards globalization as an entity by itself. It has brought forth diversity in the profession meaning educational programs can be carried out in diverse settings, conducting research in multicultural setting and more so providing competent care to multicultural clients. Therefore, it is most advantageous by integrating health systems globally and projecting towards improved healthcare worldwide.
