Nurse Burnout and Workplace Interventions

Introduction

Nurse burnout is a serious problem that affects many people in the healthcare sector. It has a devastating effect not only on nurses’ well-being and health but also on the care given to patients (Uchmanowicz et al., 2020). Nurses are greatly relied upon in the healthcare business, and being healthy is critical to providing efficient patient service (Abdullah et al., 2021). This capstone project will investigate nurse burnout in the medical sector and discover workplace solutions to prevent and alleviate burnout. “What is the influence of workplace interventions on preventing nurse lethargy in the healthcare sector?” is the PICOT question. The PICOT question examines the success of workplace interventions in mitigating nurse burnout.

Objectives

The objective of this capstone proposal is to investigate the influence of workplace interventions on nurse burnout prevention in the healthcare business. According to the SMART approach, the specific goal is to identify the reasons and effects of nursing burnout in the health sector through a review of peer-reviewed publications. This will provide a thorough understanding of the issue and will lead to the selection of relevant workplace remedies. The measurable objective is to assess the impact of effective interventions in preventing nurse burnout (Copeland, 2021). The attainable target is to use practical methods for preventing nurse burnout that may be adopted in the workplace. The realistic goal is to define the function of nurse managers in fostering a positive work environment and managing nurse exhaustion will be discussed. The project’s timeframe target is six months, during which all of the goals are intended to be accomplished.

Strategies

One strategy for achieving the specific objective is to perform a complete literature evaluation of peer-reviewed studies on the reasons for and effects of burnout in the nursing field. The second technique is to collect data from nurses and healthcare institutions through surveys and interviews. It helps to understand the specific reasons and effects of burnout in the aspect of their workplace environment (Algunmeeyn et al., 2020). Identifying the exact reasons and impacts of nurse weariness in the health sector would allow healthcare institutions to develop more tailored interventions. These interventions will aid to tackle the issues stemming from nurse burnout, resulting in better outcomes.

The measurable goal is to investigate the efficacy of workplace approaches in preventing nurse exhaustion in the healthcare profession. As a result, one strategy entails completing an evaluation of peer-reviewed studies on workplace interventions aimed at reducing burnout in the nursing field (Pieper et al., 2019). For the second strategy, data will be gathered through interviews and surveys with healthcare institutions and nurses to determine the efficiency of workplace interventions applied in their workplace. The efficacy of workplace interventions such as wellness programs in preventing nurse burnout will be investigated to improve outcomes. Following that, healthcare institutions can use coping strategies and creative interventions to decrease burnout in their personnel.

Within six months, the third goal is to determine the most successful workplace intervention(s) for minimizing nurse exhaustion in healthcare institutions. To begin, the most effective workplace strategies for preventing nurse burnout will be determined (Pieper et al., 2019). During research, a wellness curriculum was adopted for nurses, contributing to increased nurse well-being, lowered burnout, and higher job satisfaction (Wann et al., 2019). Shirey et al. (2018) discovered that coaching sessions for nurse managers led to better work environments and higher nurse job satisfaction. As a result, establishing leadership development curriculums for nurse managers could become an excellent strategy.

Background

Nurse burnout is a difficult issue that has plagued the healthcare business for many years. More than half of nurses, according to a study done by West et al. (2018), experience exhaustion. It is defined by psychological fatigue, low morale, and a decreased belief in one’s fulfillment. This can result in a variety of negative effects, including reduced job satisfaction, lower patient care quality, and an increased chance of medical errors. Nurse burnout has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, with nurses enduring heavier duties, longer hours, and elevated stress and worry. According to Liang et al. (2021), the COVID-19 outbreak has increased exhaustion and psychological well-being concerns among healthcare personnel, especially nurses. Furthermore, according to a poll done by the American Nurses Association (ANA), 41% of nurses in the US reported feeling burned out (Forrest et al., 2021). These studies emphasized the importance of interventions to alleviate nurse burnout mostly in the setting of the pandemic.

Nurse burnout drives nurse to endure heavy duties, long hours, and elevated stress and worry. Given these problems, there is an urgent need to find effective interventions to avoid nurse burnout and increase healthcare worker well-being. The capstone project will investigate workplace interventions to avoid nurse burnout and facilitate wellness for both patients and nurses. The initiative intends to enhance patient care, raise nurse happiness at work. In addition, it will help lower the risk of bad consequences linked with burnout by addressing this issue.

Conclusion

Finally, nurse burnout is a big issue plaguing healthcare systems worldwide. This capstone project will investigate workplace interventions to avoid nurse burnout. The objectives were developed using the SMART criteria to ensure that they were specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable, and had a time for completion (Ogbeiwi, 2021). To attain better results, strategies such as literature studies, surveys, investigations into effective interventions, and the implementation of managerial training and wellness schemes were identified. Research performed by the ANA and Liang et al. (2021) underscored the seriousness of nurse burnout due to its predominance in healthcare facilities, which results in lower quality of treatment. As a result, resolving nurse burnout is critical for providing great patient care as well as the wellness of healthcare personnel
