Unfortunately, nurses may fail to show leadership qualities during the practice. However, it is necessary to acquire a good sense of responsibility and find a way with patients and coworkers. A professional nurse is expected to be not only efficient concerning work responsibilities, but also good at communication and asserting authority among colleagues and patients in the clinic. In this case, soft skills may be of great value to become a leader ready to help.
There can be different ways how one can mould leadership qualities. Firstly, it was interesting to watch patients and pay attention to their expectations and needs. For instance, there was a situation when a patient asked to bring her water because she was simply thirsty. However, after a small talk, it turned out that she was afraid of the doctor’s examination. It took several minutes to compose her and convince them in the absence of pain during the procedure. This case is illustrative of a nurse being attentive to people and full of initiative.
It is generally agreed that people need communication to create a friendly, warm atmosphere that is rather than necessary in the clinic. Indeed, nurses should not be shy and keep silence all the time because their patients need words of encouragement from them (Miwon, 2006). To be ready for resorting to soft skills with patients means to be a true leader who loves and cherishes those who turn to them.
To sum it up, it is no easy matter to be a nurse. One can never expect what comes next, but it would be better to be prepared for encouraging patients. Leadership serves as an objection that is sure to be developed during practice in a gastroenterology floor at the clinic because some patients may have a phobia for a doctor’s examination. Still,a professional nurse will always find a solution to a problem.
