Implementing Evidence-Based Practice in the Workplace

It is important to note that the course provided not only invaluable knowledge but also insight and in-depth comprehension of how nursing research is conducted, structured, and presented. The two most important subjects of the course, which will have the greatest impact on my nursing practice, include nursing research ethics and nursing theories. The main reason is that the latter provides a differential and multidimensional perspective on how nursing can be viewed since each theory puts a significant emphasis on one aspect of the clinical practice. For example, I plan to utilize the theory of planned behavior as a core framework of my approach towards work, where attention is paid to attitudes, behavioral intentions, subjective and social norms, perceived power, and perceived behavioral control (Polit & Beck, 2022). Nursing ethics is also critical to integrate moral principles into practice as well as make the methods of care more structured and organized by imposing rules of conduct and strict standards.

When it comes to the application of evidence-based practice (EBP) concepts in the workplace, the major barriers are lack of knowledge and time mismanagement. It should be noted that adhering to EBP elements requires a substantive amount of knowledge and expertise since one needs to be aware of core ethical principles, research validity and credibility, theoretical frameworks, and other information. Although the course covered the most important areas of nursing research and EBP, there is still much more to be educated about, and thus, it will take time and effort to become more experienced with EBP. In addition, the workplace is not a calm and learner-friendly environment because there are many other considerations to be made, which bring chaos to nursing practice. Therefore, incorporating EBP in one’s work can be a challenging endeavor, which mandates knowledge, practical behavioral patterns, and experience. I will be able to overcome the barrier by constantly and continuously educating myself about EBP.

Evidence-based practice also encourages the integration of additional but important steps in nursing care since the approach has a clear and organized structure. Therefore, being aware of time limitations and being able to manage one’s time under the pressures of nursing can be daunting. This can be the most significant barrier to EBP since stressful workplace environments discourage step-by-step planned action, where one might want to skip some seemingly unnecessary procedures. Thus, it will be critical for me to adhere to EBP and learn time management. I will be able to overcome the barrier by always following core EBP principles with awareness of time constraints, which will ensure that I am efficient with my time management.

In conclusion, within my current work context, I can become more involved in promoting and using EBP within my department by always evaluating the credibility of nursing research, including the ones being used as a basis of practice. By doing so, I will ensure that all evidence is critically assessed and ordered in its reliability, validity, and significance. It is possible that some practices might not be based on solid evidence due to poor evaluation. In addition, I can promote EBP by adhering to the nursing theory of planned action since it can be used to change other people’s behavior through intentions, attitudes, and norms. These steps will ultimately improve patient outcomes since they will receive care, which is based on reliable evidence, from nursing professionals who have structured frameworks of action.
