Introduction
It is essential for healthcare providers, especially those in nursing, to explore mental health issues so that they can offer holistic and empathetic care. The video “Hypochondriacs: When Health Anxiety Becomes Unhealthy (Mental Health Documentary)” represents one case of health anxiety disorder, which is a significant mental problem affecting a wide range of people. Health anxiety disorder was selected as the topic because it is highly prevalent and affects many people across the globe.
Population
The video displays people suffering from health anxiety, which is hypochondria in particular. The video’s audience includes men and women of different ages, the same ethnicities, and similar economic status. These individuals may have shared characteristics associated with health anxiety, such as constant fear of having a severe ailment, asking medical professionals for comfort, and mental agony due to physical symptoms (Only Human, 2018). This population may be affected by mental illness just like any other due to life circumstances or problems that have shaped behavioral patterns in the past (Haig-Ferguson et al., 2021). In addition, this condition primarily develops from late teenage years into early adulthood.
Mental Health Concern
The disorder entails extreme concerns and apprehensions about having a severe disease that is not backed up by any medical science (Only Human, 2018). The most common among them are Sarah, Laura, and Kevin, who have health anxieties with fear of illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and heart diseases, like Kevin’s paranoia that he will drop dead any minute. About 25% of patients exhibit fear of illness (French & Hameed, 2023). Health anxiety disorder includes elevated somatic perceptions, constant unease related to one’s well-being, frequent requests for reassurance from healthcare providers, and sometimes avoiding situations that may bring on anxiety attacks (Haig-Ferguson et al., 2021). This disease affects people regardless of age, sex, or social class, as seen in the video sample of patients from various backgrounds.
Selecting an Issue
None of my friends and I have the condition. People are interested in it for research purposes and to find ways to help patients. Health anxiety is a subject that attracts scientists because it is psychosomatic in nature. The linkage between mental and physical health is seen in how psychological aspects influence bodily symptoms (Haig-Ferguson et al., 2021). In this assignment, I chose a video that really meant something to me. Moreover, this documentary provides an opportunity to meet actual patients and fully understand their state (Only Human, 2018). Thus, by studying the disease, it will be possible to improve people’s condition.
Interventions
There are two critical interventions to be made by nurses that can address health anxiety disorder in the given population, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoeducation. CBT is a well-established treatment approach that centers on the identification and alteration of negative thought patterns and behaviors. Concerning health anxiety disorder, individuals often engage in catastrophic thinking about physical symptoms (Only Human, 2018). CBT helps patients recognize and challenge these irrational thoughts, promoting healthier views of their health.
Psychoeducation involves providing patients with accurate information about an illness, debunking myths, and improving their health literacy. For someone with health anxiety disorder, realizing the psychosomatic nature of their symptoms, as well as the low chances of having serious diseases, is empowering. Nurses may hold psychoeducational sessions on topics like mind-body connection, the prevalence of health anxiety, and stress-induced physical symptoms (Menon et al., 2020). This learning anticipates that participants will be able to counter irrational fears about their well-being by gaining knowledge in this area.
Initial Reaction
As I watch the documentary, empathy is probably mingled with curiosity and some professional interest. For instance, when it can be seen that individuals have a health anxiety disorder, people may feel pity for them as they try to grapple with their fears and seek reassurance (Only Human, 2018). My sympathy towards these patients might even increase since I have thought about the impacts of health anxiety on their daily lives, relationships, and general welfare. This document could lead me to understand the psychological aspects of health anxiety within the context of physical well-being.
Feelings about Populations
I usually feel empathy, as I know well that anxiety disorders are emotionally painful for people. The prevailing sentiment would be a concern due to the population’s significant difficulties (Only Human, 2018). This condition leads to a life of fear, seeking reassurance, and infinite concerns.
The problems revolve around complex relations between physical and mental conditions and cultural condemnations of mental illnesses. Repeatedly seeking reassurances can result in numerous consultations with doctors or nurses, thereby straining healthcare resources in some cases (Asmundson & Taylor, 2020). It may also illustrate how much individuals struggle to leave this cycle as they find it difficult to trust doctors due to fears of contracting serious illnesses. For them to provide all-encompassing care for persons living with mental health issues like this, nurses must understand the psychosocial aspects related to health anxiety.
Knowledge from the Video
The video gave me much insight into mental illness, especially health anxiety disorder; to begin with, the video depicted in detail health anxiety disorder, what it is, and how it appears in people. It includes such things as an obsession with thinking that one has a severe illness, doing many activities related to good health, and always wanting some reassurance (Only Human, 2018). This was followed by discovering how severe health anxiety can be on persons themselves and the healthcare system at large. This leads to multiple doctor visits for reassurance, thereby straining the healthcare system and affecting the overall well-being of those affected by the condition (Asmundson & Taylor, 2020). Lastly, the film enlightened me on mental ailment stigma, specifically that arising from health anxiety disorder. People suffering from this problem not only have difficulties managing their symptoms, but also in getting rid of false beliefs about mental illnesses associated with them.
Future Practice
The knowledge acquired from the video on health anxiety disorder will significantly enhance my future nursing career. To me, a future nurse with a refined understanding of health anxiety disorder will allow me to tackle patients with sympathy and an increased knowledge of their struggles. Research by Asmundson & Taylor (2020) in the Journal of Advanced Nursing showed that empathy plays a central role in establishing therapeutic nurse-patient relationships and, in turn, improving patient outcomes.
The video stressed the significance of clear communication and patient education as ways of managing health anxiety disorders. It is possible to apply practical communication approaches aligned with the ideas presented within various literatures; for example, Menon et al. (2020) highlight the importance of therapeutic communication in mental health nursing. This film elucidated the stigma concerning health anxiety disorder. Informed by this consciousness, I can be an active participant in fighting against mental health stigma and promoting improved support systems for victims.
Conclusion
The study of health anxiety disorder has been an eye-opener, giving valuable perspectives on the challenges faced by individuals represented. The feelings and thoughts this evoked have enriched my appreciation of the subtleties of mental health and underscored the criticality of compassion in nursing. As a future nurse, understanding health anxiety disorder is expected to improve patient care significantly. The use of effective communication, empathy, and efforts to fight stigma are consistent with known nursing guidelines.
