Gestalt Therapy Applied to Suppressed Emotions

Gestalt therapy refers to a person-centered therapeutic approach that emphasizes the importance of the current moment, experiences, and challenges. It raises the individual’s awareness of the present and aims to improve self-direction and facilitate positive change (Skottun & KrĂĽger, 2021). In the case of Gwen, the counselor helps her focus on what is happening in her body by exploring bodily sensations and symptoms. This approach is important as it allows the client to connect her physical discomfort to her suppressed emotions. According to Skottun and KrĂĽger (2021), gestalt therapy explores the problem of suppressing emotions and their consequences on one’s physical and mental states. Hence, one of the primary psychotherapy techniques used by this approach is improving awareness of oneself. In particular, increased contact with the environment, the focus on one’s bodily reactions and physical symptoms, as well as bodywork can facilitate a better understanding of the present feelings and emotions. In turn, behavior patterns can be restructured to support personal development and relieve physical symptoms.

It can be seen that Gwen gradually explores the sensations in her body that cause her pain and discomfort as the counselor asks her to “become her hip” and speak from its perspective. In my view, such a method has therapeutic value because it encourages the client to connect her symptoms to unexpressed emotions. Gwen locates her tiredness, psychological discomfort, anxiety, and irritation in her hip as they manifest through pain. As a result, she becomes more aware of herself and begins to see the root of the issue. As Gwen outlines the problem and decides to slow down to enjoy life, she can feel a physical relief in her hip. Therefore, the application of gestalt therapy is effective for exploring one’s suppressed emotions, raising awareness of the present moment, and identifying ways to resolve the problem.
