Evidence-Based Practice: The Importance for Doctors of Nursing Practice

In recent years, evidence-based practice has become the standard for medical practitioners to provide better service delivery. By actively researching new scientific works and analyzing the best quality research, health service workers can provide care based on up-to-date evidence (“The role of evidence-based practice,” 2020). The effectiveness of such practice has led to its widespread use among nurses; however, there is a question about its application among DNP (Doctors of Nursing Practice) scholars. This essay explores this issue to determine the importance of these competencies for such professionals.

DNP is a relatively new direction, which is currently becoming more widespread. The reason for the creation of such programs is the significant credit load for nurses, in many ways corresponding to the doctoral rather than the master’s degree (“DNP fact sheet,” 2020). Thus, graduates of these areas have more extensive knowledge and a higher level of training. However, according to the AACN, unlike research-focused specialists, DNPs are trained to put what they learn into practice (“DNP fact sheet,” 2020). Therefore, like other nurses, they need to know the basics of evidence-based practice. In addition, it must be taken into account that DNP programs provide a terminal degree in this area (Trautman et al., 2018). In this regard, they are more closely associated with various kinds of research and have in-depth training in many areas. DNP programs embody the highest level of academic training, which is inextricably linked with the process of analyzing and selecting information. Since the same principles are embodied in evidence-based practice, having competence in this area is a fundamental criterion for a successful doctor of nursing practice.

Thus, like other nurses, DNPs must also pay attention to the basics of evidence-based practice as one of the most effective methods of patient care. First of all, this area of training, like APRN, is focused on practical rather than research activities, and therefore such competencies are necessary for them. In addition, of all existing nursing education programs, DNP is the highest, which means the closest contact with the academic literature. Therefore, doctors of nursing practice not only need to know the basics of evidence-based practice but also have the opportunity to apply them most effectively due to the focus of their training.
