Contribution of Friedrich Schlemm

Medicine is a complex and highly communal science. At the same time, it is one of the most important areas of human life because it is closely related to the health and control of the standard of living of the population. As in any science, medicine is characterized by individuals who have contributed greatly to the development of science. One of the brightest prominent scientists in the field of anatomy and surgery is Friedrich Schlemm. It is necessary to analyze his work and how it influenced the physician’s assistants.

One of the most complex, yet problematic human organs is the eye. The fact is that this organ gives man or animal vision, that is, the ability to see, which is one way of perceiving the environment. At the same time, the eye is a very fragile and difficult organ to study due to the specifics of its structure (Reznik, et al., 2020). Despite the fact that high technology is required to study the eye, German scientist Schlemm was able to discover and study the devices of the mechanism in the eye responsible for the outflow of fluids. The scientist’s specialty was surgery, so he paid special attention to the venous pathways and vascular connections (Reznik, et al., 2020). By analyzing the cornea and the protein sheath of the eye, Schlemm identified a channel that was named after him.

This discovery can be called truly important and decisive for physicians, because thanks to this knowledge, new ways of treating eye diseases have been improved and developed. One of the most common is eye drops (Sun & Dai, 2019). The fact is that the information Schlemm received on the principles of the outflow of fluids allowed doctors to understand how tears work and consequently to identify such a phenomenon as dry eyes. Based on these findings, eye drops were invented that work on the principle of tears (Sun & Dai, 2019). This method of treatment is currently the most widespread in the world, and doctors have gained a wealth of knowledge and a platform for further developments in the field of the eye organs.
