Advanced Practice Nursing Issues

Introduction

Advanced practice nursing is a malleable option for nurses wishing to advance their career or obtain a higher-level degree. Nurses with a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Science in Nursing are qualified to become Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs). The International Council of Nurses describes the advanced nursing practice as a field that extends the nursing scope’s boundaries, contributing to nursing knowledge, and promoting professional advancement (Schober et al., 2020). Unlike nursing, advanced practice nursing involves a wide range of responsibilities that do not need a doctor’s supervision. The nursing practice involves working for doctors, but advanced practice nursing involves full capabilities of seeing patients (Lamb et al., 2018). Professionals in advanced practice nursing are authorized to coordinate a healthcare team in planning and evaluating patients’ care. Advanced practice nursing is a more informed field than nursing practice.

Nursing Theories

Various nursing theories provide foundational knowledge that helps define the scope of advanced practice nursing. Nightingale’s Environment theory helps advanced practice nurses to consider their patients’ environment by identifying their physical, psychological, and social surroundings (Gilbert, 2020). Orem’s Self-Care Deficit theory promotes leadership skills in advanced practice nursing since it highlights five methods of helping: guiding, acting, and doing for, supporting, teaching, and promoting personal development for others (Isik and Fredland, 2021). Pender’s theory is also significant for advanced practice nursing among family nurse practitioners. The approach helps the practitioners identify behaviors that promote health and eliminate behaviors that encumber health (Khodaveisi et al., 2019). The nursing theories help the advanced practice nurses effectively perform their activities.

Conclusion

Nurses can improve their skills through advanced practice nursing that involves pursuing further nursing education. Advanced practice nurses have more advantages and responsibilities than nurses. Unlike the nurses, the advanced practice nurses are authorized to work without doctors’ supervision and can act as team leaders in healthcare systems. Various nursing theories such as Pender’s Health Promotional theory, Orem’s Self-Care Deficit theory, and Nightingale’s Environment theory help the advanced practice nurses effectively execute their responsibilities. Advanced practice nursing is significant in the nursing field since it promotes specialization and diverse nursing knowledge.
