Barriers to Career Advancement in the Nursing Profession

Ihendru-Anderson (2020) is quantitative research done by Kechi Ihendru-Anderson (2020) on barriers hindering career advancement in the United States health profession. Lobido-Wood and Haber (2018) state that good research should be objective and should have a clear purpose. In this research paper, the purpose is clearly stated as understanding the barriers that could hinder a cohesive working environment that promotes career development. It focuses on the perception of black nurses who explain the challenges they face in the workplace. This paper also studies the effect of black nurse leaders on the career development of other black nurses. The research questions of this research paper are;

  1. How is the United States nursing working environment affecting impacting the black nurses’ development?
  2. How do the black nurse leaders promote the career development of their fellow black nurses?

The report used the primary data obtained from the survey carried out by the researchers. Lobiondo-Wood and Haber (2018) define primary data as information collected directly from the sources. Participants included thirty individuals who were all black nurses from different levels. The survey included 45-60 minutes interviews conducted via phone or Skype. Liobondo-Wood and Haber (2018) give different methods of conducting surveys, including interviews and questionnaires. The data was then analyzed where the correlation was used. This study found that racism and racial bias undermined their professional growth in the finding and discussion section. Some participants argued that the United States system promotes white superiority, especially in the nursing field. This research paper is relevant, mainly when the nurses research the challenges facing the hospital’s output. This paper can discover that inequality in the nursing profession can be detrimental to the patients’ experience in hospitals.
